Descendants of John Ray

Generation No. 1

1. John1 Ray was born 1767 in Virginia. He married Unknown1.

Notes for John Ray:

John H. Ray or John Ray was born in Virginia in 1767. The name of his wife is not known at this time. It is believed that John Ray bought land in Marion County (present day Fayette County) Alabama in 1826. In the 1850 Census he was living with John H. Ray, a son, and was blind. At this time I know of three children of John Ray. There is, however, some scant evidence of other children.

Notes for Unknown:

Mary Ann Riggan said that this woman was a Berry. She came to this conclusion based on information found in a Riggan Family Bible.

Children of John Ray and Unknown are:

+ 2 i. David2 Ray, born 1793.

+ 3 ii. John H. Ray, born December 10, 1798 in Tennessee; died November 21, 1868.

+ 4 iii. Richardson Ray, born Abt. 1800 in Tenneesse; died May 19, 1884.

Generation No. 2

2. David2 Ray (John1) was born 17932. He married Susan Pickle. She was born 18032.

Notes for David Ray:

David Ray was born in 1793 and his place of birth is unknown. I would venture to guess North Carolina or Tennessee. What is known with any degree of certainty about David is sparse. It is know that he was married to a Susan Pickle, however her affinity to the Pickles in this research is unknown. In Notable Men of Alabama- Joel C. DuBose (1904), it is documented that this couple had at least one child, a girl named Elizabeth. David is also noted in this work as being a solider in the Army of Andrew Jackson during the Florida Indian Wars and as living in Tennessee and Huntsville, Alabama prior to his military service. It is known that David and Susan are buried in the Pickle Cemetery in Monroe County, Mississippi. Their grave is marked by a tombstone that reads: David and Susan Ray - Pioneers. This stone was erected by Oscar Jaggears. The census records from 1850 to 1880 for Marion County and Lamar County, Alabama add a great deal of confusion to the life of David. Below I will list the information taken from the census record:

5. Elizabeth3 Ray (David2, John1) was born 181617,18, and died September 05, 190819,20. She married Bowling Hammond Wilkerson July 15, 1845, son of Lemuel Wilkerson and Nancy Bowling. He was born October 02, 1819, and died 1862 in Shiloh, Tenneessee.

Notes for Elizabeth Ray:

Elizabeth Ray is as problematic as her father. In the Blaylock Cemetery she is buried under a stone that states that Elizabeth Ray Wilkerson was the wife of Bowling Hammond Wilkerson. It states that she was born in 1816 and died September 5, 1908. However, in the 1870 Census of Lamar County, Alabama she is listed as the 45 year old head of household. This census record would place her date of birth in 1825. Other researchers have confirmed that this Elizabeth of the 1870 Census is Elizabeth Ray. The problem with the date of birth has not been resolved.

More About Elizabeth Ray:

Burial: Blaylock Cemetery, Lamar County, Alabama21

Notes for Bowling Hammond Wilkerson:

Wilkerson served in the 16th Alabama Infantry Regiment, C.S.A. during the Civil War. According to family legend, he was wounded during the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. As southern troops retreated, Wilkerson was left propped against a tree. A later search did not find Bowling Hammond Wilkerson or his body.

Notes for Elizabeth A. M. Wilkerson:

I am of the opinion that Elizabeth (E.A.M) Wilkerson is Mary Ray listed in the 1870 Lamar County Census. It is my theory that in the 1860 Lamar County Census she was listed as Mary Wilkerson, but by the time of the 1870 Census for what ever reason she had adopted her mothers maiden name. This seems like a thin explanation, however one of her direct decedents (Kenneth Jaggears) noted that she apparently changed her name a lot.

Notes for Emily "Pus" Ray:

For some time now I have recorded that Emily and Robert were buried at Wesley's Chapel near Detroit, Lamar County, Alabama. I had recorded in these pages that there were headstones for R.S. Lockhart (October 19, 1840 - October 31, 1907) and E. A. Lockhart (April 30, 1838 - May 16, 1926) in this cemetery. In al letter ( 6/22/2000) Onay Ray Beard told me that she attended the funeral for Emily at the Lockhart Cemetery near Gatman, Monroe County, Mississippi. In a selected names inventory (7/6/2000) I found E.A. and R.S. Lockhart buried in the Lockhart Cemetery. I do not know if I simply got mixed up when I was recording information from both of these cemeteries in 1996. Review of my file from 1996 for Wesley Chapel fails to show any mention of Emily and Robert. For now I will record their place of burial as the Lockhart Cemetery.
