Descendants of Jacob Pickle

(Saturday, February 04, 2006 )

Generation No. 1

1. JACOB1 PICKLE was born Abt. 1766 in North Carolina1, and died Aft. 1850 in Attalla County, Mississippi. He married CATHERINE BERRY2 February 02, 18022. She was born Abt. 1785 in North Carolina3, and died Aft. 1850.

Notes for JACOB PICKLE:

According to one source, Jacob lived in Tennessee in 1810. He also appears in the 1830 Marion County (present day Fayette), Alabama census. He purchased land in 1838 in Monroe County, Mississippi and appears in the 1840 Monroe County Census. He purchased land in Attala County, Mississippi and apparently lived out his life there.

Notes for CATHERINE BERRY:

Research on Catherine Berry Pickle

Brief of Research by Kathi Wilcox

Provided 2/5/2002

Catherine was born about 1785. It is not known where. We know she died after the 1870

because she is listed in the 1870 census as 84 years of age. We have a document of her

marriage to Jacob Pickle is misspelled on the documents as Jacob (Tickle) Date of marriage is 2

Feb. 1802. Jacob purchased land in At tala County, Mississippi. The concensus is they are both

thought to have lived out their lives and were buried there.

Fact #1. Catherine is listed on the Family Group Sheet left by my grandfather, James Napoleon

Pickle, as Catherine Berry.

Fact #2. Documentation: Orange County Marriage Bonds. Several different copies of the

marriage. Catherine Berry marries Jacob Tickle: (misspelled for Pickle) with his mark,

indicating that he was unable to read or write, or the person recording did not hear correctly.

Another possibility of the mistake may have been in transcribing the document, a "T" may have

been mistaken for a "P". At any rate the marriage date is one year prior to the birth of their

first child, Mary in 1803. The bondsman for the marriage is Jacob Waggoner. The Waggoner Family members keep showing up on documents with the Pickle's and other people believed to be living with this group of settlers. Robert Pickle, first son of Jacob & Catherine, marries Sarah Aldridge. Sarah's mother is Judith (Waggoner) Aldridge.

F: Jacob Pickle Mar: 20 Feb 1802

M: Catherine Berry Bondsmen: Jacob Waggenor

S: Robert Pickle

F: Peter Aldridge Mar: 21 Sept 1824

M: Judith Waggoner Bondsmen: Robert Berry

D: Sarah Aldridge

Fact # 3 The naming of Jacob and Catherine's children. This couple named their first daughter ,

Mary I think this is the name of Catherine's mother. The couple name their first son, Robert

and the next son Henry. The male names are thought to be the names of both fathers of this

couple.

Fact #4 In researching the area of Orange County, N.C. during the period between the birth of

Catherine and her marriage in 1802, we find several Berry families. We have located three

Robert Berry's listed as follows:

Robert Berry who married Elizabeth Cates. This Robert is thought to be known as Robert Berry Sr. as indicated in some of the documents.

Robert Berry who married Sally Cates 12 Aug 1799. Marriage date eliminates this couple. Unless, this is a second marriage for Robert.

Robert Berry who married Mary Kemp. This Robert is thought to be known as Robert Berry Jr, as shown in some of the documents. Mary is listed as deceased in 1814 Will of Robert Berry Sr .

Fact #5 Family Group Sheet for Robert Berry Sr. married to Elizabeth Cates.

Fact #6 Robert Berry is bondsman for the marriage of Peter Aldridge and Judith Waggoner. 4 Feb 1786

Fact #7 Robert Berry Sr.'s Will dated 16 Apri11812, proved Augusta Court 1814, lists a Robert Berry as a son, possibly Robert Berry Jr. Father to Catherine.

Fact #8 Orange County Taxpayers Lists both Robert Berry Sr 1785 to 1792 & Robert Berry Jr 1786 to 1792, as tax payers in the Orange County.

Fact # 9 The 1800 Census Catherine would have been 15 to 16 years old in 1800. The 1800 census list six different Berry families in the area at that time. William, Thomas, Robert Sr., Robert Jr., Joshua, and

David. The only females in this group at the appropriate age would be in the Robert Berry Jr Family. He has one in the 10-16 and one in the 16-26. Catherine would have been the oldest or next to the oldest with seven other siblings.

Fact #10 Picture identified with Berry name. Included in a trunk passed down to myself Kathi Pickle Wilcox, from my grandfather to my aunt, and then to me is a tin type picture, identified with the following statement. "Jacob Pickle G. Grandfather of James Napoleon Pickle with wife Catherine Berry"

Conclusion: I feel the evidence strongly points to Catherine being a Berry. Women at this time

were not listed in documents as much as the men and it is rare when we can identify women

within this time period. The most convincing evidence for me, comes from my grandfather

who identified her in his research as Catherine Berry. From that information I have located

other documents which could or could not pertain to her actual family but are great possibilities.

My next step in the research is to contact people with knowledge of the Berry lines and see if

we can find the pieces of the puzzle, linking these people and actually identifying Catherine

with her family.

According to the census taker, Susan was a 22 year old daughter living in the Jacob Pickle household. I found a record of Catherine Pickle marrying William E. Ritter on September 24, 1844. If this is the case William had passed away or ran off.

Notes for ROBERT PICKLE:

I have unconfirmed reports that Robert and Sarah may have had anotherchild. Janice Craft has reported that there was another boy named Joseph Pickle. He appears in the 1870 Monroe Census, but not the 1850 Census. She says that Joseph was born in Mississippi in 1849. That would put him between Jerome and Wesely T. Pickle. However, he is not recorded in Jacob Pickle's bible records.

I have two other dates of birth for Robert Pickle. Based on the 1880 census he would have been born in 1803. The 1850 census record places his date of birth as 1801.

Marriage Notes for ROBERT PICKLE and SARAH ALDRIDGE:

There is also a Tuscaloosa County, Alabama record of their marriage for September 20, 1824. I think that this date is the date for application for a marriage bond.

Notes for SUSAN PICKLE:

There is a second date of birth record for Susan. I have a record of her birth as August 8, 1827. This needs to be checked against the Family Bible of Jacob Pickle. Susan never married as far as I can tell. She appears as a 53 year old daughter living with Robert Pickle in the 1880 Census for Monroe County, Mississippi.

iii. JIMY PICKLE, b. Abt. 1829.

Notes for JIMY PICKLE:

This child does not appear in the 1850 Census of Monroe County, so it is believed that he had died prior to 1850. Janice Craft thinks that Jimy is a girl and Jacob Pickle's Bible makes no gender distinction. Little more is known of Jimy.

12. iv. MARY PICKLE, b. October 06, 1831, Fayette County, Alabama; d. January 07, 1902.

4. HENRY2 PICKLE (JACOB1) was born 1807. He married LAVINIA RAY. She was born 1809 in Tennessee17.

Notes for HENRY PICKLE:

Henry Pickle owned at least 200 acres in the Northwest 1/4 of Section 16 and the southeast 1/4 of the Northeast 1/4 of Section 17 of Township 17, Range 16 West in Monroe County, Mississippi. This tract of land was sold to Willis Calvin Blaylock on December 10, 1887 for a sum of seventy dollar and twenty five cents. A copy of the deed was attained by Rayburn Blaylock an provided to me. The following list of people ware named as heirs of this estate.

1) V.O. Camp

2) Elizabeth Camp - daughter of Henry and wife of V.O. Camp

3) Alfred Pickle - Alfred's wife Celia is named in the text of the deed but not signed.

4) Elijah Pickle - Elijah's wife Martha Ann (McDonald) is namedas M.A. in the text of the deed.

5) Samuel - a son of Henry

6) S.E. Pickle - Susan Emeline Lockhart, wife of Samuel.

7) John H. Pickle - son of Henry

8) N.J. Pickle - Nancy J. Baker, wife of John H. Pickle

9) L.C. Pickle - Lavinia, daughter of Henry

10) J.F. Lann - Jimmy Lann, husband of Susan Pickle

11) Susan Lann - Susan Pickle, daughter of Henry Pickle

Notes for LAVINIA RAY:

Note a lot is known of Lavinia at this time. We know that she was born in about 1809. She appears in the 1880 Monroe County Census as a widow living with a Lavinia C. Pickle and two granddaughters listed as Mary A. (age 20) and Susan (age 3). This Lavinia C. Pickle is most likely the last child of Lavinia and Henry Pickle. At this time, I feel that is is a relatively safe to assume that Lavinia Ray Pickle was somehow related to David, Richardson, and John H. Ray. How I do not know.

It is interesting to note that Lavinia's place of birth given in the 1850 Census is Alabama. However, in the 1880 Census her place of birth is given as Tennessee and her parent's place of birth is given as Virginia.

Children of HENRY PICKLE and LAVINIA RAY are:

22. i. ELIJAH3 PICKLE, b. August 19, 1828; d. November 12, 1902.

Notes for GREENBERRY PICKLE:

Greenberry's date of death or final resting place is not known. However, it is assumed to be the Ray-Pickle Cemetery. The 1850 Census of Monroe County lists Greenberry and Enna along with seven children and In this census he is credited with a farm that was worth 140 dollars.

6. JAMES2 PICKLE (JACOB1) was born April 05, 1813 in Georgia27, and died September 02, 1875 in Fayette County, Alabama27. He married JANE WARD. She was born January 11, 1815 in South Carolina, and died September 02, 1884 in Fayette County, Alabama27.

Notes for JAMES PICKLE:

When many of the Pickles migrated from Fayette County, Alabama to Monroe County, Mississippi James stayed behind and raised a family. James and Jane appear on the role of the New River Primitive Baptist Church in Fayette County during the mid 1800's. I suppose that the separation was complete. By 1860 this portion of the Pickle family spelled their name Pickel. When I learned of this family, I questioned Myrtice Ray and Kenneth Ray about Fayette County Pickles. Neither had any knowledge of distant relatives back in Alabama.

In the 1850 Fayette County Census for the 15th Division, James date of birth is calculated as 1816 and his place of birth is given as Alabama. ( www.usgenweb/Al/Fayette/census/1850/00866.gif). In the 1860 Census, his date of birth is 1810 (1860 Fayette County, Alabama Census, Eastern District, Page 32/376).

In 1860 James had a real estate value of 600.00 and a personal value of 1760.00 (1860 Fayette County, Alabama Census, Eastern District, Page 32/376)

According to Katie Nola, James was named Justice of the Peace for Fayette County on March 15, 1847 (E-mail from Katie Nola 2/25/2001).

Notes for JANE WARD:

In the 1850 Fayette County Census for the 15th Division, Janes date of birth is calulated as 1819 and her place of birth is given as Georgia. ( www.usgenweb/Al/Fayette/census/1850/00866.gif). In the 1860 Census, her date of birth is 1813 and place of birth Scouth Carolina (1860 Fayette County, Alabama Census, Eastern District, Page 32/376).

In 1860, an Elizabeth Ward, age 60, was living in the house with Jane and James. The affinity of this North Carolina born Elizabethis not known at this time (1860 Fayette County, Alabama Census, Eastern District, Page 32/376).

8. JACOB LEWIS2 PICKLE (JACOB1) was born 1820 in Alabama45, and died April 07, 1887. He married MAY MARY BLACK46, daughter of JACOB BLACK and MARY SAVAGE. She was born February 22, 1827 in Fayette County, Alabama, and died Bef. 1880.

Notes for JACOB LEWIS PICKLE:

In the 1870 Census of Attalla County, Mississippi, Jacob and three children are living next door to Kizannah Johnson. In the house of Johnson is 89 year old Catherine Pickle. Kizannah, born 1830 in Mississippi is the wife of M.R. Johnson. (Craft Letter, May 1994). The affinity to the Pickle line of this Kizannah is not known at this time.

I have a record of Jacob's place of birth as Tennessee. As of 8/18/2000 I cannot reconfirm this record.

Notes for MAY MARY BLACK:

In the 1850 Census, a Susan Black was living in the house with Jacob and May Mary. This Susan(17 years old) is thought to be May Mary's sister.

Children of JACOB PICKLE and MAY BLACK are:

i. JOHN R.3 PICKLE46,47, b. Abt. 1845, Mississippi; m. (1) MARY JANE MCKINLEY; m. (2) MARGARET ELIZABETH HUTCHISON.

Notes for JOHN R. PICKLE:

Betty Wiltshire reports that a J.R. Pickle, age 19 was reported in the Descriptive Register for 1864 and 1865. This man was 5' 7" in height with grey eyes, light hair, and fair complexion. The place of birth given was Monroe County, Mississippi and his trade was given as a potter ( Attala County, Mississippi Pioneers). Recently, I leaned that Jacob Lewis Pickle was a potter of some note. Based on what we know about John's year of birth and the similar occupations, it seems that the above is a description of John Pickle ( Green 6/6/2002)

39. ii. GEORGE WASHINGTON PICKLE, b. December 13, 1848, Mississippi; d. July 24, 1868.

9. NANCY2 PICKLE (JACOB1) was born 1825 in Alabama56. She married (1) JASPER HENRY "GOSS" LEE September 09, 1845. She married (2) DILL Bet. 1846 - 1864. She married (3) WILLIAM HENRY MILTON JENKINS 1864. He was born 1809 in South Carolina, and died April 24, 1871.

Notes for NANCY PICKLE:

Nancy's life is marked by a series of marriages apparently due to death of spouse or back luck in her choice of mates. In her life she married a Lee, a Dill, and a Jenkins and had children with each of the men. The fate of Goss Lee is unclear. Some say he ran off and died. However, the Pickles always maintained that he married again and produced another family. At any rate, in 1850 Nancy and Sara Isobel was living in the house with Jacob and Catherine Pickle. Some time in the next four years Nancy married a man named Dill. Apparently Mr. Dill died or ran off by 1864. That year she married William Henry Milton Jenkins.

Jacob Pickle was known as One-eyed Jake Pickle. He was a member of Co. L 24th Mississippi Inf. Regiment during the Civil War. He served in this regiment with his brother, William R. Pickle and his future second father in law John Hastens Blaylock. According to daughter, Myrtice Ray, the One-eyed nickname came form the fact that he was blind in one eye. The blindness was incurred by being poked in the eye by a broken jug. The jug was a whiskey jug that how somehow got broken. While trying to ride a horse or mule and take a drink Jacob inflicted the eye wound upon himself.

Notes for SINTHIA M. IRVIN:

From dates in Jacob Pickle's family bible it has long been inferred that Sinthia died of childbirth complications. Halin T. Pickle, Jacob and Sinthia's last child was born Januray 1, 1877 and Sintha died

Januray 8. The baby did live until October.

Sinthia is buried in the Irvin Cemetery. This cemetery is located about a half mile off of the Gar Irvin Road in Monroe County, Mississippi. Knowledge of her burial comes form Myrtice Ray (personal interviews) and a visit I made in early 1990's. I saw Sinthia's marker on my only visit to the Irvin Cemetery or at least I thought that I did. Through recent communication with researchers that have visited the cemetery in the past few years I have learned of the absence of Sinthia's grave.(GKG Personal Note 12/18/2000)

Notes for JOHN W. GREEN:

The following is a story told to William Linley from Greens and Lanns, and apparently was confirmed by Bo Morris ( William Linely E-mail 3/31/2000). John W. Green was a member of Company I, Monroe Raiders, of the 24th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, CSA. He was wounded in battle and was in a hosptial in Kentucky, At some point he left Kentucky and did not report to duty, Instead, John along with two Chaney brothers came home to Monroe County. Sometime after reaching the protection of home, he apparently stole some money form his father-in-law Henry Pickle. Apparently Henry, or the law caught up with John in Detroit, Lamar County, Alabama and hung him along with the unlucky brothers behind the Detroit post office. William believes that he is buried in the Old Franklin Cemetery near Detroit.

The estate of Henry Pickle that was sold to W.C. Blaylock on December 10, 1887. Samuel Pickle and wife Susan signed the legal documents as legitimate heirs of Henry Pickle.

32. JOHN R.3 PICKLE (GREENBERRY2, JACOB1)242 was born Abt. 1839 in Mississippi. He married FRANCIS LECRITA "CREASE" STUCKEY243 1868. She was born 1850 in Macon County, Georgia, and died August 26, 1926.

Notes for JOHN R. PICKLE:

According to the Stuckey family history, this marriage was not approved of by the brides family, and thus contact with the Stuckey family was cut off after the marriage. Ironically, after losing wedding gift of 40 acres from her father, they moved to Detroit, Alabama. Later , according to the 1910 Census, they lived in Ackerman, Choctaw County, Mississippi. Apparently they lived out the last years of their life in Gattman, Mississippi. Francis died August 20, 1926 and was buried in Gattmann. John Robert's date of death and burial place is not known. Through my research I have encounter several discrepancies on the dates of birth and names of the children of this couple. There is also some problems with census records and records of other researchers in the matter of the ages of John Robert and Francis. It should be noted for future reference, that Elenore Cochran believes that two of the daughters married, one to a Pope and one to a Blaylock.

Notes for FRANCIS LECRITA "CREASE" STUCKEY:

After reading more inforamtion provided by Elenore Cochran in her letter of July 1998, I beleive that the Stuckey family was living in or around the Detroit, Lamar County, Alabama area at the time of the marriage of John to Francis.

Notes for SARY UNKNOWN:

Another source has this person named Lucy. I cannot remember the source. I will use Sary Unknown from the Wimberly Home Page (www.members.accessus.net/~twimberly/index.htm) for the time being.

The name written for Robert's wife in the 1860 Census appears to be Lesey. Upon closer examination this written name could be interpreted as Lucy (1860 Fayette County, Alabama Census, Eastern District, Page 32/376). The key to this is to find this couple in 1870 (Green 7/31/2002)

Notes for PHELEN PICKLE:

In the 1870 Census of Monroe County, his name is spelled Felon. Sharon Malony, in E-mail of 2/17/00, believes that the infants buried in the New Hope Cemetery were twins, due to the arrangement of their graves. Phelen's tombstone states that he was 44 years of age when he died. Calculations based on date of death and age state on the tomb would place his year of birth as 1859. This contradicts the information deduced from the 1880 census.

Mr. Pickle's Story:

In 1877, my grandfather came to the old GRIFFITH Stand near present Monroe, Okla. My father was 5 weeks old. They rode the train most of the way and rode the ferry across the Miss. R. They came from Mississippi.

My grandfather, Jerome R. Pickle built one of the first cotton gins in the I. T. at the old Griffith Stand. He used the mule or horse for power, as he (horse) would be driven 'round and round'.

I am familiar with the location of a number of old Indian and family burial grounds in this part of Oklahoma.

I have what I consider to be one of the most interesting and complete collections of Indian relics that I have ever seen.

I, personally, gathered almost every item in this collection from old battlefields (Indian) and camp grounds of Southeastern Oklahoma.

The collection includes arrowheads, spearheads, ornaments, mortars and pestles, tomahawks and a few unidentified articles.

Notes for N. L. "NANCY" PICKLE:

The identification of N.L. Pickle as Nancy and the information of her marriages and children comes from the work of Berenice Nash. In the 1910 Census of Monroe County, Ozema and Lee Nash were living in the household of their grandfather, Samuel Pickle. In the 1920, Ozema was still living with her grandfather. An aunt named Susan A. Pickle was listed also listed in the 1920. Berenice knew that Ozema's mother was a Nancy Pickle, so she deduced that Nancy was the N.L. Pickle listed in Samuels 1880 household (E-mail from Berenice Nash 7/05/2001).
